March Book of the Month

Sunrise on the Reaping” is Suzanne Collins’ latest addition to the Hunger Games series, released on March 18, 2025. This prequel is set 24 years before the original trilogy and centers on a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell.

In this special edition of the Games, the Capitol mandates that each district provide double the usual number of tributes, resulting in four tributes from each district. Haymitch, a resident of District 12, is unexpectedly thrust into the arena after intervening during a reaping incident involving his girlfriend, Lenore Dove. His fellow District 12 tributes include Maysilee Donner, Wyatt Callow, and Louella McCoy.

Inside the arena, Haymitch forms a temporary alliance with Maysilee Donner. Together, they navigate the treacherous environment, which is lush in appearance but riddled with poisonous hazards. Haymitch discovers that the arena is enclosed by a force field that causes objects thrown at it to rebound. This knowledge becomes crucial in his final confrontation with a Career tribute from District 1. By strategically dodging her attack, he causes her weapon to ricochet off the force field, leading to her death and securing his victory.

However, Haymitch’s defiance and manipulation of the arena’s mechanics incur the wrath of President Snow. As punishment, the Capitol orchestrates the murder of his mother, brother, and girlfriend, Lenore Dove, upon his return to District 12. This devastating loss profoundly impacts Haymitch, contributing to the cynical and detached demeanor he exhibits in the original series.

“Sunrise on the Reaping” delves into themes of power, propaganda, and the ease with which the many are governed by the few, drawing inspiration from the philosophies of David Hume. The novel provides a deeper understanding of Haymitch’s character, his motivations, and the traumatic experiences that shape his role as a mentor to future tributes like Katniss Everdeen.

A film adaptation of “Sunrise on the Reaping” has been announced by Lionsgate, with a scheduled release date of November 20, 2026.
